What is Induction? Charging by induction is where a charged object causes electrons to move inside another object, without them touching. No charges move.

Chapter 7.2 Electric Force

Force Force is defined as a push or a pull. There are two different types of forces: Contact forces, which are forces that can have an effect only on objects they touch. Action-at-a-distance forces, apply force to an object without touching it. Ex/ electric force

Electric Force Electric force = push or a pull between charged objects.

The Laws of Static Charge Like charges repel Opposite charges attract Neutral objects are attracted to charged objects. If you increase the amount of charge, the attraction or repulsion between charges will be greater. If you decrease the distance between charges, the amount of attraction or repulsion will be greater. We can create a charge in two ways….

Charging by Conduction Charging by Conduction = Charging a neutral object by touching it to a charged object Touching the neutral object with a charged object allows electrons to be transferred to the neutral object.

Charging by Induction Charging by Induction = Charging a neutral object by bringing a charged object near it No electrons are being transferred instead, inducing a charge repositions electrons inside the neutral object As soon as the charged object is moved away, the neutral object goes back to the way it was before the charged object was brought close.

Attraction of Neutral Objects Induction explains why neutral objects are attracted to charged objects. For example, when you rub a balloon against your hair, it becomes negatively charged. It will still stick to a neutral wall because a positive charge is induced on the surface of the wall as it repels the negative charges away.
