ENERGY HUNTSVILLE 2019 Sofos Harbert Renewable Energy and the Southeast Solar Industry Business

JUAN MAYORAL – SOFOS HARBERT CEO & PRESIDENT

SOFOS HARBERT Sofos Harbert Renewable Energy is dedicated to being a leader in the design, development and construction of solar energy facilities around the world. Our understanding and commitment to high quality and honest service allows us to get involved in any phase of a solar energy PV project. We are flexible, experienced, and we cover a large part of the world thanks to our headquarters located in Birmingham, Alabama, and with Europe offices near to Barcelona, Spain.

SOFOS HARBERT SERVICES Sofos Harbert Renewable Energy has two major lines of business: Turnkey Projects (EPC= Engineering Procurement Construction) and Project Development.   These lines of business are divided in three kinds of products or services: Utility Scale Photovoltaic (PV) projects Commercial & Industrial (C&I) PV projects Development of projects greenfield C&I UTILITY-SCALE DEVELOPMENT

SOFOS HARBERT EXPERIENCE Thanks to our teaming agreement with our corporate partners we have more than 14 years in PV solar industry experience, accumulating over 300 EPC and O&M projects.

SOFOS HARBERT TODAY Thanks to our teaming agreement with our corporate partners Sofos Energy and BL Harbert International, we have international presence in almost every relevant market. Sofos Harbert is a proud member of the Alabama Solar Industry Association (AlaSIA)

PV SOLAR ENERGY INSTALLATION General PV Systems Introduction   To understand Solar Energy and Sofos Harbert Renewable Energy business here are the basics of a PV Solar Energy Installation. Always in compliance with local regulations, it may vary between states or countries.

KEY PLAYERS Solar Energy Plant To understand more in depth about Solar Energy we will explain the key players and how they interact in the PV industry. Solar Energy Plant 1. Developer Is the company that develops the project from scractch until they have the licenses for construction and connection to the grid, PPAs, etc. Usually Developers sell those licenses to the owners (IPPs). 2. EPC The EPC company is in charge of design, construction and procurement of everything for the asset (solar farm). The EPC is usually hired by the owner. 3. Off-Taker The off-taker is the energy consumer and can buy the energy from an external IPP or buying the asset and benefits from the energy savings, becomes the owner. 4. Utilities Usually are regional companies that can be either the off-takers or the owners. Examples: Southern Power, Duke Energy, FPL. 5. Owner (IPP) IPP = Independent Power Producer. The owner could keep the asset and sells energy to the Off-Taker (IPP Fund) or can sell the project to a long term IPP fund and makes profit for the sale (IPP Developer). The owner hires an EPC company for the construction of the solar farm. 6. Financing To finance a project there are different key players, Private Funds, Banks, Multilaterals, etc. Sponsor or Funder: those who put the equity for the project. Usually the Bank is the one that finance the debt to the owner, typically 80%. 7. O&M Company Company specialized in offering the operations and maintenance services to the owners.

U.S. & SOUTHEAST According to Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables: “Total installed U.S. PV capacity is expected to more than double over the next five years. By 2023, over 14 GWdc of PV capacity will be installed annually.” The growing natural gas plants installation has driven solar new implementations down to a 30% in 2018. Still a good number, though.

U.S. & SOUTHEAST Alabama currently has no state or local Renewable Portfolio Standards. As in other states, the lack of an RPS has translated to an unfortunate lack of incentives to support solar power. (solarpowerrocks.com)

U.S. & SOUTHEAST Alabama currently has no state net metering system, being one of the only 6 states in the nation where net metering is not regulated. Alabama don’t have an interconnection statewide regulation neither any solar rebates or state tax credits. image from: https://www.conexx.org/about-conexx/major- corporations-in-the-southeast/

SOLAR INSTALLATION For the Commercial & Industrial there are 3 most popular options for PV solar installation: On the manufacturing facility roof On the ground, manufacturing company own land Solar carports

WHAT TO DO There are different options on what to do with produced energy, the best two opportunities are: Power Purchase Agreement: “A PPA is the principal agreement that defines the revenue and credit quality of a generating project and is thus a key instrument of project finance. There are many forms of PPA in use today and they vary according to the needs of buyer, seller, and financing counter parties.” (Wikipedia) Behind the meter: “A Behind the Meter system (BTM) is a Renewable Energy system uniquely designed and built for a single building or facility. Its purposes are: to reduce the carbon footprint of the building by generating electricity 'locally' from renewable sources.” (Hybridyne Power) Aqui explicar lo que es un PPA vs C&I behind the meter

PPA vs BEHIND THE METER PPA in Alabama PPAs in Alabama are possible but not all its varieties. In most cases the PPA will go through the utilities such as Alabama Power, TVA or Power South, making it a more complicated structure than Behind-The-Meter systems. BTM in Alabama This is a great option for advanced manufacturing facilities in the state. Owning an on-site behind the meter system is the most recommended option right now in Alabama for C&I. Self consuming the produced energy without having to negotiate a PPA with a third-party is the best case scenario.
