Multiplying Mixed Numbers Chapter 2.2D

½ of 1 ½ 3 4

1 Lets try multiplying like normal first… 1 2 1 2 x NOOOOO the whole number blocked us! : ( 1st multiply straight across. 1 2 1 1 2 x We need a TOP and a BOTTOM so lets make it IMPROPER!

1 3 2 1 2 + x 1st BIG times the BOTTOM Then ADD the TOP! Here’s what we did… 1 x 2 = 2 and then 2 + 1 = 3 Now put it BACK over 3 to make our fraction! 3 2

3 4 Now we can multiply! 1 2 3 2 x Make sure to simplify either FIRST or LAST if you can!!!

3 1 2 4 3 9 4 36 12 1 3 1 4 x x = = + + x x Then ADD the TOP! Now, do it AGAIN! 1 1 3 2 1 4 + + x x x 1st BIG times the BOTTOM 4 3 9 4 36 12 3 x = =

3 4 9 3 4 3 x = 1 Remember, you could have simplified 1st too!!! The 4s can cancel out! 3 x = 1 The 3 and 9 can divide by 3!

2 1 2 4 5 3 1 8 + x x 4 5 25 8 100 40 5 2 5 1 x = = 1 2

1 3 4 2 3 2 5 8 + x x 2 3 21 8 42 24 7 4 7 1 x = = 1 4

3 1 3 1 1 4 2 2 3 + + x x x 5 4 8 3 40 12 10 3 2 x = = 1

11 1 3 6 4 5 1 2 3 + + x x x 34 5 5 3 170 15 34 3 x = =

Change the Mixed Number 2 9 1 4 3 4 2 x x 2 9 3 4 9 4 54 144 x x = 2 3 8 =
