you can be a slave & be free at the same time

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not.

What then. Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey — whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? - v15-16

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. A. “I live in a free country. I can do anything I please! Right?” Can you?

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. A. “I live in a free country. I can do anything I please! Right?” 1. Even in a free society – your freedom ends where they infringe on the freedoms of your neighbor.

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. A. “I live in a free country. I can do anything I please! Right?” 2. The Bible says that pleasing yourself is actually sin.

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. A. “I live in a free country. I can do anything I please! Right?” 3. So – pleasing yourself is not real freedom!

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. B. As a slave – what choices do you have? Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey — whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? - v16

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. B. As a slave – what choices do you have? Matthew 6:24 - No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters?

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters? One is sin . . . . . . the other is obedience to God.

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters? The Big Question!

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters? The Big Question! . . . You are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? - v16 a. Why does it say – “sin, which leads to death, or to obed- ience, which leads to right- eousness”?

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters? The Big Question! . . . You are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? - v16 b. Shouldn’t it say – “sin, which leads to death, or to obed- ience, which leads to life”?

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters? The Big Question! . . . You are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? - v16 c. The answer: With God – sin is disobedience and right- eousness (being right with God) is life!

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. C. Who are the Masters? The Big Question! . . . You are slaves to sin, which leads to death - v16

I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. II I. You Are a Slave Whether You Admit It or Not. II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most.

But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. - v17-20

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. A. “Obey” is in the present tense, so it means “You are slaves to the one whom you continually obey”. But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. – v16 Obeying is something you must be in the habit of doing.

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. A. “Obey” is in the present tense, so it means “You are slaves to the one whom you continually obey”. 2. Your master is the one you addict yourself to.

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. A. “Obey” is in the present tense, so it means “You are slaves to the one whom you continually obey”. 2. Your master is the one you addict yourself to. a. The one you give the most time to.

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. A. “Obey” is in the present tense, so it means “You are slaves to the one whom you continually obey”. 2. Your master is the one you addict yourself to. b. The one you give the most strength to.

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. A. “Obey” is in the present tense, so it means “You are slaves to the one whom you continually obey”. b. The one you give the most strength to. Mark 12:33 - To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength.

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. B. Slavery to Sin. John 8:34 - Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. B. Slavery to Sin. John 8:34 - Everyone who sins is a slave to sin. So – sin, in this verse, is the sin habit!

II. Your Master is the One You Serve the Most. B. Slavery to Sin. I put this in human terms because you are weak in your natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. - v19 What is the Law of Sin?

- v19 What is the Law of Sin? a. It’s presenting your bodies as slaves.

- v19 What is the Law of Sin? b. It’s addiction! To alcohol, to drugs, to sex - to anything!

- v19 What is the Law of Sin? c. Sin, in general, is the same thing.

You commit more & more sin to get the original thrill. You commit more & more sin to get the original thrill.

But – the more you do it – the less of a thrill you get. But – the more you do it – the less of a thrill you get.

What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. - v21-23

III. So - Why Change Masters? For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – v23. A. Because of the Wages.

III. So - Why Change Masters? Sin’s paycheck is death! For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – v23. A. Because of the Wages. Sin’s paycheck is death!
