Blood typing – Multiple Allele Genetics at its best!

What is in blood? Red Blood Cells White blood cells Platelets Plasma Carry oxygen throughout body Determine blood type

What does your blood type mean? Different blood types have different SURFACE PROTEINS called antigens on their RED BLOOD CELLS

Rh Factor If your blood does contain the Rh protein, your blood is said to be Rh positive (Rh+) If your blood does NOT contain the Rh protein, your blood is said to be Rh negative (Rh-)

What are antibodies?  An antibody is a protein produced by the body's immune system that recognizes and helps fight any substance in the body that does not belong.

Let’s figure this out: Use the blood typing models to work through some scenarios.

What happens when someone with blood Type B gets a transfusion of blood from Type B? Accepted If Type B gets A? Rejected If B gets O?

2. What happens when someone who’s AB gets a transfusion of Type A? Accepted If AB gets O? If AB gets B?

3. What happens when someone who’s O gets a transfusion of Type O? Accepted If O gets A? Rejected If O gets B?

Blood Types Phenotype Genotype Type A AA Ao Type B BB Bo Type AB AB Type O oo

4. What possible phenotypes could result from an Ao x AB cross? AA Ao AB Bo

5. Anna asked Jerry Springer for help. Her baby’s blood type is O 5. Anna asked Jerry Springer for help. Her baby’s blood type is O. Anna’s blood is Type A. She knows the baby’s daddy is either Keith or Jack. Who is it? 1. Jack (Blood type AB) 2. Keith (Blood type B) A A B A B AA Ao AB Bo AB Bo Ao oo
