Module 1 Exponential Notation & Properties of Integer Exponents Lesson 1 Exponential Notation

Warm Up 1 minute Find at least two other ways to show the following: 2+2+2+2+2

Learning Target I can write numbers in exponential notation I will know the reason for why some bases require parentheses

Independent Materials – none 1 minute Suppose I gave you a choice between getting $100,000 or doubling a penny every day for 4 weeks. -Which would you choose? (be prepared to explain why)

Share 1 minute Using at least one Talking Point, share your response with your partner. $100,000 1 penny doubled

Predict Materials – none 4 minutes Let’s look at the 1penny a day for 1 month: 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 Total from week 1: 127 pennies or $1.27 Do you want to change your answer? Make a prediction about the total amount after 4 weeks now that you know 1 week.

Week 2: 128 256 512 1024 2048 4096 8192 Week 2 total: 8192 pennies= $81.92 Week 3: 16,384 32,768 65,536 131,072 262,144 524,288 1,048,576 Week 3 total: 2,080,768pennies= $20,807.68 Week 4: 2,097,152 4,194,304 8,388,608 16,777,216 33,554,432 67,108,864 134,217,728 Week 4 total: 268,338,304 pennies= $2,683,383.04

Pair Materials- worksheet, whiteboard, sock, whiteboard markers 3 minutes Week 1: 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 Let’s factor each number to find its prime factors (remember the factor tree?) Work with your partner to factor each of the numbers above. Ex:

Individual Materials – worksheet, pencil 1 minute Jot down on your worksheet some patterns you are noticing.

Partner Share Materials – non 1 minute Share with your partner the pattern(s) you found.

Partner/All together Materials – none 1 minute With your partner, try and find a way to rewrite the prime factors of 64 (2x2x2x2x2x2) in a manner that is more efficient. Be prepared to share with the class.

Independent Materials – Notebook, pencil 5 minutes When we have numbers that are the same factors (the same number being multiplied), we can use exponential notation to write the numbers in a manner that is more efficient (easier). The exponent shows how many times the base is being multiplied by itself. So in expanded form, this means 2x2x2

Partner Materials – Worksheet 2 minutes Rewrite the numbers in exponential notation. Leave 1 blank- we will come back to this.

Independent Materials – worksheet 4 minutes Practice factoring and writing numbers in exponential notation.

T-P-S 2 minutes What if the number being factored has more than 1 prime factor (for example, 18 is made up of 2 and 3 and 3). How would you write numbers like this in exponential notation?

Individual Materials: Notes and pencil Time: 3 minutes So 18= 2 and 3 2 We write this as 18= 2x 3 2

Individual Materials: Worksheet and Pencil Time: 4 minutes Practice! On the back side of the worksheet, work on question 5. When you are done, you may start on numbers 6 & 7.

On the piece of scratch paper that was handed out to you, Exit Ticket! 4 minutes On the piece of scratch paper that was handed out to you, 1) Write your name 2) Write the following numbers in exponential notation: a) 81 b) (-3)(-3)(-3)
