1.1.1c.  Through observations, Newton realized that any two bodies attract each other with a force that depends on their masses and the distance between.
 Compare the models of the universe developed by Ptolemy and Copernicus.  Summarize Kepler’s three laws of planetary motion.  Describe how Newton explained.

Gravitation Chapter 7. Kepler’s Laws  In the 1600s Johannes Kepler proposed three laws of planetary motion based on observational data. The laws are:
Aristotle suggested an Earth-centered, or geocentric, model of the solar system. In this model, the sun, the stars, an the planets revolved around Earth.

Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion Pg. 7 Law of ellipses – The orbits of the planets are ellipses, with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse.

Laws of Planetary Motion 2. Law of equal areas – an orbiting object sweeps through equal areas in equal periods of time. he orbits of the planets are ellipses, with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse.

Laws of Planetary Motion 3. Law of periods(harmonies) – average distance of a planet from the sun(a3) is proportional to the square of its orbital period(time it takes to orbit the sun)=T2 a3 α T2 1 Astronomical Unit =149,597,871 km 1 solar mass =1.9891 × 1030 kg This was used to calculate how far away the planets are from the sun.
