Internal Assessment

Historical Investigation Specific historical enquiry that allows student to develop the skills of a historian Student will search for, select, evaluate and use evidence to reach a decision or solve a problem

Internal Assessment 1500 - 2000 word written account It is not an essay It is an investigation divided into specific sections 20% of the HL History total assessment Internally assessed, externally moderated

Historical Investigation Sections A - Plan of Investigation (100-150) B - Summary of Evidence (500-600) C - Evaluation of Sources (250-400) D - Analysis (500-650) E - Conclusion (150-200) F - List of Sources

Plan of Investigation Two major parts: Question, which should be focused and stated clearly Methods to be used in the investigation

Summary of Evidence The facts, the facts, the facts! Can be bulleted or prose. Needs to be organized and referenced. Quotes can be used but they need to be set in context. Limited or poor sources indicate a lack of thorough research and affects the marks in this section.

Evaluation of Sources Evaluation of two of the most important sources used in the investigation The evaluation should clearly refer to the source’s origin, purpose, value and limitation. The emphasis is on thorough evaluation The intent is to assess the usefulness of the sources and not to describe their content. This is not a comparison.

Analysis Each of the following needs to be included in this section: Importance of the investigation in its historical context Analysis of the evidence, not a restatement of the evidence Differing interpretations, when appropriate

Conclusion Clearly stated and consistent with the evidence presented in the paper. No new evidence should be presented here. No “Perry Mason conclusions”.

List of Sources and Word Count Bibliography or list of sources in an appropriate format Alphabetize by author’s last name Word count must be between 1500 and 2000 words or no points can be awarded.
