Water Resources Water is essential to life on Earth. Humans can live for more than month without food, but we can live for only a few days without water.

Groundwater 97% of all of the Earth’s water is found in our oceans (salt water) Of the 3% of freshwater that remains 2/3 of it is frozen in the ice caps.

Groundwater What is Groundwater???? The water that has seeped into the soil and rock. The underground area is broken down into 4 areas… 1) Zone of Aeration.
 Last week we discussed how run-off can occur two different ways:  Surface Run-off – water flowing on the surface to streams, rivers and oceans.  Subsurface.

Groundwater When runoff infiltrates the ground, it becomes groundwater.

The Location of Groundwater Unsaturated Zone – rain water passes through this zone Saturated Zone – where the water collects These two zones meet at a boundary called the water table

Groundwater moves SLOOOOOW Have students demonstrate the speed of water flow. River = sprint Lake = walk GW = slide http://techalive.mtu.edu/meec/module04/GroundwaterSpeed.htm

Aquifers A rock layer that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater is called an aquifer

Aquifers The more open spaces between particles in an aquifer, the more water the aquifer can hold The percentage of open space between individual rock particles in a rock layer is called porosity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNWAerr_xEE

1. 3D Aquifer – play around with the diagram. 3. MapMaker Find your house Find the nearest river Follow and mark the rivers until you get to Fontana Lake Give the rivers titles along the way (Tuckaseege River) 2. River Stages Play around with the map and observe different rivers Find a river somewhere in the United States at each stage. Write down the name of the river and its height: Major Flooding Moderate Flooding Minor Flooding Near Flood Stage No Flooding 4. Study Island/ NC River Basins
