The Dewey Decimal System or How to find books in our library using MATH!!!!

HOW do I ever find what I need? With over 17,816 items in the library . . . HOW do I ever find what I need?

NUMBERS!!! Thank you, Melvil Dewey! 1851-1931

To the Left of the Decimal . . . 000-099 General Works 500-599 Natural Science 100-199 Philosophy & Psychology 600-699 Applied Science (Technology) 200-299 Religion 700-799 Fine Arts 300-399 Social Sciences 800-899 Literature 400-499 Languages 900-999 Geography & History

000-099 Generalities Books on many different types of subjects (sometimes not yet invented or imagined in Dewey’s lifetime).

100-199 Philosophy & Psychology Books that tell us how we think, feel, and act.

200-299 Religion Books that tell us about different religions or mythologies to help us figure out our purpose.

300-399 Social Sciences Books that tell us about how people live together. Fairy tales/folktales are here because they’re written to teach lessons.

400-499 Languages Books that tell us how to communicate with others: foreign languages, how to write, how to use proper grammar.

Books that are about things from nature. 500-599 Science Books that are about things from nature.

600-699 Applied Science Books that are about how we apply science, medicine, and technology to our lives.

700-799 Fine Arts & Recreation Books that are about the things we do for fun (arts, sports, and games).

800-899 Literature Books that explore what makes us who we are: stories, plays, and poetry. Fiction books are supposed to be here, but there are too many!

900-999 Geography & History Books that tell us about the events of the past and countries of the world.

To the RIGHT of the Decimal ... You may find up to three numbers. 956.704 What is the name of each place value?

How do I find numbers on the shelf? You have to remember PLACE VALUE!!!

Numbers increase in value as you move from left to right. Just like a number line . . . Numbers increase in value as you move from left to right. The first book on the shelf will have a lower number than the last book on the shelf.

Imagine these are books on a shelf. 678.45 LON 679.2 MAR 678.3 SMI 678.32 CAR 680.9 MCD 680.99 MOR 683.74 LOD

Some books may have the same decimal number. THEN you have to know the first three letters of the author’s last name. This doesn’t happen very often.
