Volcanoes were named for the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.

Volcanoes A volcano is a mountain that forms when magma reaches the surface. Magma rises because it is less dense than the solid rock around and above.

Igneous Rock Features

Batholith Hardened magma chamber Can be 100’s of kilometers wide, long and thick

Laccolith Magma that came up through the crust and hardened, but never broke through and never became a volcano. Pushes up layers of rock Smaller than a batholith

Dike Magma squeezes into vertical cracks that cut across rock layers

Sill Magma squeezes into horizontal cracks between rock layers

Volcanic neck A volcano stops erupting and the magma hardens inside the vent. Erosion wears away the sides of the volcano and leaves the solid center

Caldera Large opening formed when the top of a volcano collapses down into the partially emptied magma chamber

Volcanic Bombs, Easter Island Devil’s Postpile, CA

Giant’s Causeway, Ireland
