THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT What is i2CAT? i2CAT is a non-profit private Foundation of Catalonia, Spaini2CAT –Its mission is to promote the innovation and the research of second generation Internet –In HD over IP, its goal is to collaborate on the development of HD over IP technology share HD contents over Internet, specially cultural contents

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT i2CAT experiences with HD 2001 Open Opera –Live transmission of an Opera (La Traviata) from Liceu Opera House to a cinema both in Barcelona to compare spectators feelings. –After several tests with experts, we concluded that the only acceptable quality was uncompressed high definition –Thus, we used a point-to-point uncompressed High definition transmission (not over IP) i2CAT Media Gateway HDSDI SDI MPEG2 (10Mbps) CINESA Diagonal UNIVERSITIES (UPC,UdG,UdL) IPMulticast HDSDI (1,5Gbps) Liceu Opera House

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT i2CAT experiences with HD From this successful experience, we aimed to set up the same scenario, but transmitting HD over IP We contacted with Researchchannel and, from this collaboration we have been able to set up a HD over IP platform (SDTI system) and carried out several demos… –In October 2003, we transmitted the Inauguration of Academic Year in UPC (Catalan University) from a on-campus building to our lab (recorded) –In February 2004, we transmitted a doctor honoris causa ceremony, in UPC, from a building to another (live) –In June 2004, Pionner Europe introduce a new HDTV plasma screen (PDP-504 HDE) by showing different HD sources in plasma screens, one of these sources was using the SDTI system –In September 2004, HD over IP transmission between Barcelona and Busan using a User Controlled Light Path (UCLP)UCLP

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT i2CAT experiences with HD In conclusion, we have transmitted a variety of contents, from soccer to opera and from cultural content to academic ceremonies, for demo purposes Furthermore, we have contents in HDV (broadcast quality high definition), with cultural contents from Forum of Cultures of Barcelona 2004

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT Ongoing projects In the following we briefly explain two of the ongoing projects related to HD over IP: –Compilation of HD over IP efforts –The SIP-based HD signaling framework

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT Compilation of HD over IP efforts (HDwiki) There are few (or not?) research groups working in HD over IP There are a lot of information about HD, a lot of information about IP, but scarce information about HD over IP Due to this, we have promoted the creation of a wiki page on HD over IP –A wiki is a web page where any person can add or modify contents in a very easy way, in this case related to HD over IP wiki We invite any of you to register and provide your experiences in HD over IP We have created an structure and fill some sections just to facilitate the beginning of this task The web page is

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT The HD signaling framework High Definition transmission requires high bitrates: –20 Mbps MPEG-2 (HDV system) –270 Mbps (SDTI system) –1,5 Gbps (HDSDI system) It implies some issues to be studied, one of this is the HD signaling framework –to set up and down real time communications sessions –and control media servers in video on demand In HDSDI or SDTI system (1500 or 270 Mbps), they have to send a video stream per transmitting unit In HDV system they have to run an instance of the Videolan software per stream

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT The HD signaling framework Nowadays, there are some efforts in this direction –In real time HD videoconferencing, there are efforts to be integrated in Access Grid –HDV system in High-quality Video Service for Access Grid (Networked Media Laboratory, GIST)High-quality Video Service for Access Grid –HDSDI system in Ultragrid Project (ISI/EAST)Ultragrid Project –In video on demand, it is solved using web servers to initiate a video stream from the transmitting unit to the receiving unit –HDV system (MPEG-2) in GIST HD VODGIST HD VOD –HDV system (MPEG-2) in Researchchannel Desktop HDResearchchannel Desktop HD

THE 7TH ANNUAL SURA/VIDE CONFERENCE March 28-31, 2005 © Fundació I2CAT The HD signaling framework In i2CAT, we consider SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) as the integrated framework to signal both real time communications and control video on demand. –HD over IP is an evolution of VoIP, but with high definition media SIP can provide it without modifications, just both ends have to negotiate this quality To access contents, it is needed that SIP acts as a control protocol –In this direction there are some work in progress, as the Internet Drafts of MSML (Media Sessions Markup Language), and MOML (Media Objects Markup Language), which create a general-purpose media server control architectureMSML MOML In i2CAT, we are under development of a HDV system (Videolan based), using this approach to control it
