Why did Adams send diplomats to negotiate with France? The French were angry that the U.S. was neutral in the France-Britain conflict. They began seizing/attacking American trading ships. Who were Mr. X, Mr. Y, and Mr. Z? Representatives for France.   What did these three men demand from American diplomats? They demanded a bribe in exchange for France to stop attacking U.S. ships. How did Adams respond to this demand? He continued to negotiate with France. How did the United States avoid war with France? By staying neutral, negotiating, and gaining respect from the French government.
