AERIplus Retrieval Description First guess uses 20 km RUC NWP hourly analysis above 2 km Surface moisture, ceilometer cloud base height, and PBL regression first guess using AERI radiances below 3 km combined as a priori input with RUC (Description in JAM paper Feltz et al. 2003) Current temporal resolution ten minutes, vertical resolution improved in lowest kilometer from 100 m to 50 m (temporal resolution should be averaged to hourly continuous forcing data set) at five AERI DOE ARM SGP sites and Homestead site (just reprocessed) Not available during precipitation, fog, or through/above clouds

12 June 2002 Water Vapor Oscillation The AERI instrument was deployed from May 13 - June 25, 2002 near Balko, Oklahoma (western Oklahoma panhandle) for the International H2O Program (IHOP) field campaign to measure water variability and how this relates to convective initiation and atmospheric boundary layer development. A rapid (30%) oscillation was retrieved from the AERI infrared radiances and this was also indicated from GPS retrieved integrated water vapor. This is the largest water variability in less than a 24 hour period retrieved from ten minute AERI radiances. Total Precipitable Water 20 km RUC Analysis

Summary All AERI data recently reprocessed for six sites (DOE ARM and Homestead, will update JOSS archive >10 minute temporal resolution temperature and water vapor, preliminary analysis indicates the AERIplus retrievals provide AERI Instrument Collection rate of 98% during IHOP, AERI retrievals were possible with ~60% of radiances, however this increases to 80% when providing a retrieval within a one hour time bin Validation is ongoing and collaborations on several case studies are in progress AERI References/Data Available at: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/ihop/
