More like Judas than we think

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 CSB

More like Judas than we think

While Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman approached him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume. She poured it on his head as he was reclining at the table. Matthew 26:6–7 CSB

When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. “Why this waste When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.” Matthew 26:8–9 CSB

Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for me. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me. Matthew 26:10–13 CSB

By pouring this perfume on my body, she has prepared me for burial By pouring this perfume on my body, she has prepared me for burial. Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” Matthew 26:10–13 CSB

Then one of the Twelve, the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” Matthew 26:14–16 CSB

So they weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him So they weighed out thirty pieces of silver for him. And from that time he started looking for a good opportunity to betray him. Matthew 26:14–16 CSB

Jesus’ mission verses Judas’ vision

Perhaps we are more like Judas than we think if we have the vision of political solutions over the power of the gospel.

The woman’s worship versus Judas’ greed

Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray him), said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” John 12:4–6 CSB

He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it. John 12:4–6 CSB

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 CSB

The woman’s worship versus Judas’ greed

Perhaps we are more like Judas than we think if our financial priorities aren’t set on building the kingdom of God.

The woman’s “waste” versus Judas’ bribe

Perhaps we are more like Judas than we think if we are trying to manipulate God to do our will.

Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it…. Mark 8:34–38 CSB

…For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life? What can anyone give in exchange for his life? Mark 8:34–38 CSB

…For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:34–38 CSB

Perhaps we are more like Judas than we think if we are trying to manipulate God to do our will.

When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too, Acts 17:6 CSB
