First reading will be due 4/25!

Socratic Seminar The questions should be related to our thematic concept of Human Condition AND the texts you’ve been reading. I will look for you to use the Discussion Starters (academic discourse – see posters that have been on the wall all semester) as a part of your discussion as well. Ghandhi’s On Civil Disobedience (from yesterday) Solzhenitzyn’s One Word of Truth Outweighs the World (today) Wiesel’s Hope, Despair, and Memory (today) Voice episode from Grey’s Anatomy (we will watch tomorrow) Edward Scissorhands A Thousand Splendid Suns

Big Questions What is the importance of speaking the truth in the face of adversity? To what extent are we responsible for our fellow humans?

Class Matters: “When the Joneses Wear Jeans” (p. 134-145) Read the chapter, “When the Joneses Wear Jeans” (p. 134-145) What is the “problem” discussed? (State it clearly.) Is there a solution to the “problem”? If yes, what is it? If no, why not? What is the author’s main argument? How does she communicate that argument? (Pull in examples of ethos, pathos, logos from the chapter. You could make a chart…hint hint!) Reading purpose questions: How is our definition of success constructed? How has the definition of success changed over time? Be prepared to discuss and cite evidence throughout.
