UNRAVEL: Close reading to write a powerful paragraph -A Comprehension Strategy

THE Unravel steps to close read for a powerful paragraph Underline the title. Now predict the passage. Run through and number the paragraphs. Annotate the writing task. Venture through (read) the passage. Earmark your evidence. Let’s ACE- Answer, Cite, Explain.

UNRAVEL Have students write UNRAVEL on their paper so that they can mark out the letter as they complete the step.

U: UNDERLINE THE TITLE Read the title when you are underlining it. This activates prior knowledge. This step prepares you to make predictions & connections.

N: NOW PREDICT THE PASSAGE Ask yourself “What do I think this passage will be about?”. Use your prior knowledge. Use pictures, charts, or graphs if there are any available.

R: RUN THROUGH AND NUMBER THE PARAGRAPHS This helps you to locate the answers. This helps you to organize your thoughts.

A: Annotate the writing task This sets your purpose for reading! What is the writing task asking you to do? Find out what what the task is asking for so you will know what you are looking for in your reading.

V: VENTURE THROUGH AND READ THE PASSAGE Read the passage carefully. Reread if needed while keeping the writing task in mind. Read with your pencil and annotate while reading.

E: Earmark your evidence Reread the writing task. While you are reading, look for evidence that supports your answer.

L: Let’s ACE ! Answer the question! Cite the evidence! Explain how your evidence supports your answer!
