Unit 2 Unmanned Aircraft Module 2.1 – The Control Station Component

Module 2 – The control station component 2.1 – GCS Function GCS Function Link that connects crew to UAS Can very depending on scale and complexity of UAS Composed of input interface and software interface Includes antennas and of other equipment needed to preform the operation Internal GCS enclosed within a shelter Does not visual line of sight of UAS Pilot is considered an internal pilot Internal stations could be: Building Moveable Container Truck Part of a Vehicle, Aircraft or Ship

Module 2 – The control station component 2.1 – GCS Function External GCS is located outside, with direct visual line of sight 107.17 Medical Condition No person may manipulate the flight controls of a small unmanned aircraft system or act as a remote pilot in in command, visual observer, or direct participant in the operation of the small unmanned aircraft if he or she knows or has reason to know that he or she has a physical or mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of the small unmanned aircraft system.

Module 2 – The control station component 2.1 – GCS Function Interfaces The human machine interaction that controls the UAS Various type of interfaces depending on the complexity of the UAS Controller interface Is the simplest interface UAS is directly controlled by the human with low to no automation Laptop interface Slightly more complex Moderate to full automation for the flight plan UAS is controlled through the computer Tablet interface Similar to laptop interface Controlled with just the tablet for user inputs

Module 2 – The control station component 2.1 – GCS Function Computer Terminal interface Combination of a controller and laptop interface Allows the laptop to manually maneuver the flight controls and flight information Flight Desk interface Complete mockup of an aircraft flight deck Dedicated systems and screens to control the UAS These are internal GCS Can be located on all types of vehicles

Module 2 – The control station component 2.1 – GCS Function Software Interface Based on the manufacture and autopilot onboard All should have these common attributes Payload Data – different values displayed based on load Health – overall condition Airspeed – airspeed of the aircraft Altitude – provides pressure sensors, laser altimeters, or GPS altitudes Heading – uses GPS, IMUs, Magnetometers to display compass heading Telemetry – process of recording and transmitting the readings, and real time data Moving Map – shows the position of the UAS and shows the path of travel Flight Planning – uses moving map display to plan a flight operation Status – what the UAS is currently doing
