What is it? Organic agriculture is a system that does not use synthetic material, such as fertilizers or pesticides, for production. This alternative to traditional farming puts an emphasis on biodiversity, soil fertility, and ecological balance. Organic agriculture is not just choosing not to use pesticides, but also about providing care for the soil, livestock, plant, and human health.

Examples Organic pesticide- Pyrethrin, found naturally in the Chrysanthemum flower. Beneficial insects- Insects, such as ladybugs, can eat other insects that are harmful. Cover crops- Crops such as clover can be planted between growing seasons to replenish the soil with nutrients and prevent erosion.

Basic Principles Use ecological principles and work with natural systems rather than dominating those systems Keep as much organic matter and as many nutrients in the soil and on the farm as possible Avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides Maintain the soil by increasing soil mass, biological activity, and beneficial chemical properties Reduce the adverse environmental effects of agriculture
