First let’s start out with a crash course… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= ANi709MYnWg

The pH scale A numerical scale to indicate how acidic or basic a solution is pH stands for “potential Hydrogen” or “power of Hydrogen”

What does pH measure? The concentration of hydronium ions, H3O+ in a solution 2H2O OH– + H3O+ Water is constantly switching back and forth between water and ions “OMG Ms. H, that makes NO SENSE” -7th Period Let’s clarify… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xeuyc55LqiY

On the Left side… Box 1: Draw a hydronium and hydroxide ion Box 2: Summarize how they form

What does it mean? More H3O+ = more acidic More H3O+ = lower pH number

Acids Release hydronium ions (H3O+) when dissolved in water. More hydronium ions than hydroxide ions.

Properties of Acids What are some examples of Acids? You have 1 minute to make a list in box 3 Feel like water Taste sour pH less than 7 React with metals Lemon juice Lime juice Orange juice Apple juice (see a pattern?) Sour candy Vinegar Coffee

Uses of Acids Open up the book to page 396 You have 1 minute to skim and find 2 uses of acids…

Bases Release hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water. More hydroxide ions than hydronium ions.

Properties of Bases What are some examples of Bases? You have 1 minute to make a list in box 4 Feel slippery Taste bitter (opposite of sweet) pH greater than 7 Tea Acetone Ocean water Blood Soaps and detergents Ammonia Baking Soda

Uses of Bases Open up the book to page 399 You have 1 minute to skim and find 2 uses of bases…

Why power of Hydrogen? Soda has a pH of about 2.5!! Each number on the pH scale is separated by a power of 10. This means that a solution of pH 3 is 10 times more acidic than something with a pH of 4 and 10000 times more acidic than pure water (pH 7)!
