Setting the Stage – SE Asia pg 362 What is the Pacific Rim? Why did European nations desire the Pacific Rim? What value did Europe recognize in these lands? What happens when Europeans realize the value of the Pacific Rim?

Gray Dark Green Dutch Imperialism in Indonesia Late 1700s: Dutch East India Company controlled most of the 3,000 mile long Indonesia island chain Used islands as plantations (sugar, bananas, rubber, coffee, coconuts, and pineapples) With the discovery of oil in the region, the Netherlands took control of the islands making them Dutch East Indies colony Dutch used the direct method of governing the islands British Imperialism in SE Asia Gray British colonize Malaysia , Burma, N. Borneo & Singapore Dark Green British needed resources like tin & rubber to finish the Suez canal and needed the port in Singapore
