Leadership for Safety Through the Case Method Pilot International School of Nuclear and Radiological Leadership for Safety Leadership for Safety Through the Case Method

Case Study Methodology Case Study / Learning Goals Individual / Group Discussions Class Analysis and Action planning Conclusions / Recommendations Take Away Messages

Case Method & Our Cognitive Processes Traditional Systematic / Analytical / Critical thinking Divided in small units, step by step (for hindsight) Study of large complicated system by dividing it into smaller units Synthesis thinking Synthesis means putting different pieces together, to see the connections, relationships, and patterns of interactions to see the new whole (for insight). Thinking two or more different ideas at the same time. Systemic thinking Systemic thinking is understanding and seeing the interrelationships within the a complex system. It is both Systemic and Analytics, think big and small at the same time.

Analytical Thinking Synthesizing Intuition Problem prototype Process of thought Analysis of essence solution Local Optimization, or Seeing the trees Not the forest Rearrangement Transformation or changed configuration

What Is A Case? “A case is a description of an actual organisational situation … involving a decision or a problem. It is normally written from the viewpoint of the decision-maker involved, and allows the students to step figuratively into the shoes of the decision-maker” Erskine, Leenders and Mauffette-Leenders, 1981 A case provides the participants with a context in which to use, develop and test analytical tools and conceptual frameworks A case is an opportunity to practice real-life decision making in a risk free environment We don’t teach cases, we teach with cases

Why Cases? – For the student This gives you near-real practice Engagement is much more fun than listening This leads you to take much more responsibility for your own learning: Learning from other students Preparation, contribution to class!

Why Cases? – For the Teachers More effective learning process – adult learning literature Concept in Practice vs Theory Process vs Content Functional vs Organization (Local vs Global) The importance of relevance and integration Systematic (Analytical) vs Systemic Interactive process between the Teachers team members

How does the Case Learning Process Work for Students How to think and speak Preparation is a must! Individual preparation… Team meeting… Group discussions Class discussion, other students thought process (how they are thinking?) Deals with real world ambiguity, incomplete information, complexity With reduced stress in an almost risk-free environment Involvement = real learning, not rote learning Builds up decision-making capabilities and teamwork skills

How does the Case Learning Process Work? Importance of Institutional norms Preparation Class conduct Contribution expectations
