10.3 Insects

POINT > Describe insect characteristics POINT > Describe the body structure of an insect POINT > List groups and examples of insects POINT > Describe 2 types of metamorphism POINT > Discuss how insect mouthparts are adapted

POINT > Describe insect characteristics Insects are arthropods with 3 body segments 3 pairs of legs (6 legs) 1 or 2 pair of wings One pair of antennae Mouthparts adapted for eating different foods

POINT > Describe the body structure of an insect Insects: 3 body segments: 1. Head has sensory organs (eyes, antennae) 2. Thorax where legs and wings are attached to body 3. Abdomen contains many of the insects’ organs and tubes that carry oxygen to the cells

CHECK: What are 3 characteristics of insects? What are the three body segments in insects? What is the thorax? What is the abdomen?

POINT > List examples of insects Orders of insects: Orthoptera: grasshoppers, crickets, locusts Lepidoptera: butterflies and moths Hymenoptera: bees, wasps, ants

POINT > List examples of insects Orders of insects: Diptera: flies Coleoptera: beetles Dictyoptera: cockroaches and mantids

CHECK: Which order of insects includes butterflies? Which order of insects includes grasshoppers? Which order of insects includes flies? Which order of insects includes bees and ants? Which order of insects includes beetles?

POINT > Describe 2 types of metamorphosis Metamorphosis: the insect body changes over time All insects go through metamorphosis 1. Complete metamorphosis – 4 stages egg  larva  pupa  adult 2. Incomplete/gradual metamorphosis – 3 stages egg  nymph  adult

POINT > Describe 2 types of metamorphosis Complete metamorphosis: 4 stages Ex. flies, ants, beetles, butterflies

POINT > Describe 2 types of metamorphosis larva larva

POINT > Describe 2 types of metamorphosis Gradual metamorphosis: 3 stages Ex. termites, grasshoppers, dragonflies The nymph does not have wings The adult does have wings

CHECK: What are the four stages in complete metamorphosis? What are the three stages in gradual metamorphosis? What are 3 characteristics of all arthropods? Which group of mollusks includes snails and slugs? Which main group of arthropods have 8 legs and no antennae?

POINT > Discuss how insect mouthparts are adapted As a group, insects eat almost anything edible Different insects have specialized mouthparts for eating different foods Chewing, sucking, sponging, cutting, etc
