Hive Parts

Langstroth Hive Comes in 10 frame or 8 frame set up Queen excluder is not always necessary Most common hive used

Lids Telescoping Lid Migratory lid

Box sizes Shallow- Used for honey Medium- Used for honey and hive body at times Deep- Used for hive body. Occasionally used for honey due to weight

Frames Frames must be used for proper sized box. Shallow, medium, deep from left to right.

Foundation types Wired Wax/ Wax Pros- Bees typically draw it out correctly, less drone brood production Cons- Risk of contaminants in the wax, must be braced, bees don’t always draw it out correctly

Foundation types Plastic Pros- Stays straight, longevity, durability Cons- Bees don’t take to it well at times, its plastic

Foundation types Foundationless Pros- Cheaper, less chance of contaminants in wax Cons- Honey extraction, cross comb, control over cell size (worker vs. drone)
