Presentation transcript:

MONDAY, FEB. 3 DO NOW: 1-Rearrange the formula v = d t so that d is the subject. (The formula will look like d = ….. 2- Solve for d in the above formula when v = 15 meters/second and t = 2 seconds.

Let’s look at your practice formula problems from Friday: 1-Rearrange the formula, F = ma, so that m is the ‘subject’. What does the variable, m, represent? 2-Rearrange the formula, P = W , so that W is t the subject. What does W represent?

3-Rearrange the formula, v= d so that t is the t subject. What does t represent? 4- Rearrange the formula, w = mg, so that g is the subject. What does the variable, g, represent?

5- Rearrange the formula, Ep = mgh, so that h is the subject 5- Rearrange the formula, Ep = mgh, so that h is the subject. What does h represent? 6- Rearrange the formula, Ek = ½ mv2 , so that v is the subject. What does v represent?

HAND IN YOUR PRACTICE PROBLEMS TO YOUR CLASS TRAY FOR CREDIT! 7- Rearrange the formula, d = ½ gt2, so that g is the subject. HAND IN YOUR PRACTICE PROBLEMS TO YOUR CLASS TRAY FOR CREDIT!

Tues., FEB. 4 DO NOW: Rearrange the formula, d = ½ gt2 so that t is the subject. (The formula will look like t = …..)

LEARNING INTENTIONS Students will express lengths and distances in metric (SI) units and convert distances between different units. Students will convert time in units of hours/minutes/seconds into seconds. SUCCESS CRITERIA Students will accurately convert distance and time between different units in practice.

Distance and Length Key Question: How do we accurately communicate length and distance?

Vocabulary Terms meter centimeter millimeter kilometer surface area distance length time time interval

Distance and Length measurement - a quantity and a unit distance - is a length the amount of space between two points

Two Systems of Units Science problem solving requires both: Metric system English system

Units of Length The common units of measurement in the English system are inches, feet, yards, and miles. These four length units are related to the meter.

Convert Units conversion factor - is the number by which you multiply or divide a quantity in one unit to express the quantity in a different unit.

Convert length You live 8 kilometers from JMAC. How many meters is this? Your desk is 60 centimeters wide. How many millimeters is this? How many meters is this? 1) You are given distance in yards. 2) You are asked to find distance in meters. 3) 1 yard = 3 feet, 1 foot = 0.3048 meters 4) Solve: 100 yards = 3 feet/1 yard x .3048 m/1 foot = 91.4 m

Surface Area vs. Volume surface area - is the measurement of the extent of an object’s surface or area without including its thickness. volume - is a measure of the space occupied by an object.

Time Key Question: How do we measure and describe time?

Time Two ways to think about time: What time is it? 3 P.M. Eastern Time on April 21, 2013, How much time has passed? 3 hr: 44 min: 25 sec. A quantity of time is often called a time interval.

Converting Mixed Units of Time You are asked for time in seconds. You are given a time interval in mixed units. 1 hour = 3,600 sec 1 minute = 60 sec Do the conversion: 26 minutes = 26 × 60 = 1,560 sec Add all the seconds: t = 3,600 + 1,560 + 31.25 = 5,191.25 sec
