The Battle of Stalingrad August 21, 1942- February 2, 1943 Jess DeLucia, Laura Rutledge & Tom Collis

Description of Battle Took place in city of Stalingrad Fought between Russia and Germany Hitler ordered that the German Army couldn’t surrender, despite Russias six armies plan to surround the city. Caused them to lose more supplies and lives. Germans eventually had to surrender when they ran out of supplies and 91,000 men were taken prisoner.

Leading up to Battle 1941 Operation Barbarosa failed May 1942 Germans resume their attack June 1942 German forces invade Eastward across South Russia toward Stalingrad and the oil rich caucasus region After capturing Rostov July 27th, German forces split

Once branch captured port of Sevastopol The other moved towards Stalingrad...

Goals & Objectives Germans: Russians: humiliate Stalin and secure capture of the Volga River cripple Soviet war effort Secure routes South to oil fields of Caucaus Russians: Protect land by any means

Losses Axis powers suffered 850,000 casualties of all types (wounded, killed, captured, etc.) Red army suffered total of 1,129,619 casualties

Outcome & Impact Soviets won Marked end of German advance on Eastern Front German army’s greatest defeat Marked turning part of WWII against Nazi Germany and Allies
