Single-Factor Dimensional Analysis

WRITING CONVERSION FACTORS Conversion factors are used when you have to convert a quantity from one unit to another. Converting from one factor to another using a conversion factor is the process of DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS. Any equality can be written in the form of a fraction called a conversion factor. A conversion factor is easily distinguished from all other numbers because it is always a fraction that contains different units in the numerator and denominator. CONVERSION FACTORS: Numerator OR 1 kg Denominator 2.20 lb.

WORKED EXAMPLE 1 What is the mass, in grams, of a piece of lead that has a volume of 19.84 cm3? SOLUTION. 1g= 1cm3, so…  19.84 cm3 x 1 g = 19.84 g = 1.98 x 101 g 1 cm3

Practice 1. Convert 4.5 weeks to minutes. Solution. 4.5 wk x 7 days x 24 hours x 60 min 1 week 1 day 1 hr = 45000 min = 4.50 x 104 min

Practice 2. Convert 30 mL to dm3 Solution. 30 mL x 1 L x 1 dm3 1000 mL 1 L = 3.00 x 10-2 dm3
