Writing and Supporting Your Thesis Oh, my goodness, we have work to do.

Problem 1: Include books or characters in thesis when comparing literature The issue of civil rights has been so controversial and debatable that they are continued to be fought for today. Problem: Just a general statement of belief and not tied to literature.

Problem 1: Include books or characters in thesis when comparing literature (cont.) Restrictions can pose beneficial and negative influences. Problem: Just a general statement of belief and not tied to literature.

Problem 1: Include books or characters in thesis when comparing literature (cont.) Problem: Just a general statement of belief and not tied to literature. Speculating (guessing)

Problem 2: Thesis compares topic, not theme Both Maya Angelou and the newspaper writer express how themselves or someone else is being limited. Problem: That is the topic, but a theme is a lesson or major idea the author wants you to come away with.

Problem 3: Thesis that leaves you nothing to prove/support Although “Animal Farm” and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” are two completely different stories, they relate to each other because they deal with animals. Problem: This is not a theme. In fact, all this requires is that you give evidence that animals existed in the selections.

Problem 3: Thesis that leaves you nothing to prove/support (cont.) Although Jonas and Jessica, the main people in the selections love their freedom, adults cannot obviously agree with this. Problem: You would have to prove why adults can’t agree with loving freedom. This is difficult to impossible because that information is not in either selection.

Problem 4: Thesis is not specific “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, by Maya Angelou said what people are nowadays thinking in “Technology Lets Parents Track Kids Every Move”. Problem: You need to be specific about what they are thinking.
