U.S. History Vocabulary Words Week 2

Boisterous Part of Speech: adjective Definition: noisy Synonym: loud, rowdy Antonym: quiet, calm “The class is typically boisterous on Fridays because its almost the weekend.”

Bolster Part of Speech: verb Definition: to support Synonym: strengthen, reinforce Antonym: weaken, deteriorate “After missing the field goal, the needed to bolster the ego of the kicker.”

Compile Part of Speech: verb Definition: to put together in one book or document Synonym: collect, amass Antonym: disperse “To write a thesis the author much compile his sources.”

Component Part of Speech: Definition: a part, element or ingredient. Synonym: piece, part. Antonym: unrelated, unfamiliar “The keyboard is a component of a computer.”

Curtail Part of Speech: verb Definition: to cut short or bring to an end. Synonym: eliminate, shorten Antonym: promote, encourage “In an effort to curtail terrorist attacks, the government created a no-fly list.”

Deficient Part of Speech: adjective Definition: lacking or defective Synonym: inadequate, insufficient Antonym: complete, adequate “Students who study are not deficient in their understanding of vocabulary words.”

Eccentric Part of Speech: noun Definition: a person who has an unusual, peculiar, or odd personality, set of beliefs, or behavior pattern. Synonym: different, strange Antonym: normal, ordinary “Edgar Allan Poe was an eccentric person but a very talented writer.”

Grotesque Part of Speech: adjective Definition: odd or unnatural in shape, appearance, or character; fantastically ugly or absurd; bizarre. Synonym: hideous, disturbing Antonym: beautiful, appealing “The Tell-Tale Heart depicts a grotesque murder.”

Hoax Part of Speech: noun Definition: something intended to deceive or defraud Synonym: fake, unreal Antonym: real, actual “Bigfoot is a hoax?”

Mediocre Part of Speech: adjective Definition: of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate: Synonym: insufficient, lacking Antonym: outstanding, sufficient “Although the team had many stars, their record was only mediocre.”

Nonchalant Part of Speech: adjective Definition: unconcerned, indifferent, or unexcited Synonym: lazy, unenthused Antonym: excited, enthusiastic “The uninterested women did not succeed because her efforts were nonchalant.”

Perspective Part of Speech: noun Definition: a mental view or prospect Synonym: mindset, perception Antonym: objective “To get the full perspective, we must look at many different conclusions and opinions.”

Revoke Part of Speech: verb Definition: to take away Synonym: withdraw, recind Antonym: give, return “The judge revoked the probation of the defendant for multiple violations.”

Spontaneous Part of Speech: adjective Definition: a sudden or unplanned event of happening. Synonym: unplanned, unexpected Antonym: foreseen, expected. “When school was closed for a snow day, the happiness of the students was spontaneous.”

Ultimatum Part of Speech: noun Definition: a final, uncompromising demand Synonym: demand, force Antonym: allow, compromise. “The Confederacy issued an ultimatum to Abraham Lincoln not to invade the South.”

Unify Part of Speech: verb Definition: to bring together. Synonym: unite, complete Antonym: separate, divide “At the summit, President Obama tried to unify the Israelis and Palestinians.”
