OBJECTIVE 10 Identify tools used in the entry retrieval,processing,storage,presentation,transmissi on and dissension of information. Example of hardware, software and communication tools, tools associated with the internet including online services, search engines, Usenet, internet relay chat(IRC), telnet, file transfer protocol(FTP), newsgroup, messageboard, mailing list, internet telephony.

HARDWARE Computer hardware is the collection of physical parts of the computer Examples of computer hardware are keyboards, mouse, monitors, speakers, printers, microphone and storage devices (CD/DVD, Flash drives)

An example of a hardware device

SOFTWARE Computer software (often just called software) is a set of instructions and associated documentations that tells a computer what to do or how to perform a specific task. Examples of computer software are internet browsers and operating systems.

Examples of software;

COMMUNICATION TOOLS A communication tool is a specific device or product that carries a communication message to a target group. Different communication tools are often used as part of an effective communication plan in order to communicate the intended message to the target. Examples of controls are : intranet, chat rooms, discussion forum, internet blogs, podcasts and gamification.

Usenet Usenet is a collection of user submitted notes or messages on various subjects that are posted to servers on a worldwide network. Each subject collecting posted notes is known as a newsgroup. There are thousands of newsgroups and it is possible for you to form a new one to add to the collection. Usenet servers can be accessed by using a Usenet browser like supernova or newsgroups.

Internet relay chat (irc) Internet relay chat is a application layer protocol that facilitates communication in the form of text. The chat process works on a client/server networking model. IRC clients are computer programs that a user can install on their system. These clients communicate with chat servers to transfer messages to other clients. IRC is mainly designed for group communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing. Some examples of IRC servers are opera net, free node and EFnet

Telnet Telnet is a terminal emulation that enables a user to connect to a remote host or device using a telnet client usually over port 23. For example a user may telnet into a computer that hosts their website to manage his or her files remotely. Telnet was created and launched in 1969.

File transfer protocol (ftp) File transfer protocol is used to transfer files between computers on a network. You can use FTP to exchange files between computer accounts, transfer files between an account and a desktop computer, or access online software achieves. File transfer protocol was written and published on 16th April 1971. An example of FTP are Godzilla and cute FTP

Newsgroup A news group is a discussion about a particular subject consisting of notes written to a central internet site and redistributed through Usenet. Newsgroups are organized into subject hierarchies, with the first few letters of the newsgroup name indicating the major subject category and sub-categories represented by a subtopic name. Many subjects have multiple levels of subtopics. Some major subject categories are: news, rec (recreation), soc (society), sci (science), comp (computers), and so forth (there are many more). Users can post to existing newsgroups, respond to previous posts, and create new newsgroups.

An example of a message board is a online bulletin board

Mailing list Mailing list are useful for sending email messages to a group using a single email address. Mailing lists are housed on a server that allows you to choose who can become a part of the group, who can send mail to the group and it allows you to approve messages submitted by group members before going to the whole group.

Internet telephony Internet telephony is a type of communication technology that allows voice calls and other telephony services like fax, SMS and other voice messaging applications to be transmitted using the internet as a connection medium. Software under this technology is a cost effective and convenient because it allows the user to communicate through fax, voice and video calls anywhere in the world as long as there is an internet connection. In this way users are able to bypass the charges that are common in traditional telephone services. Also known as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
