Objectives Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimals. Essential Question- Can you tell how many decimal places there will be in a product? NS 2.1- Students should be familiar with the rules for multiplying and dividing whole numbers in order to multiply and divide decimals.

Vocabulary Leading digit- the first nonzero digit Compatible numbers-are numbers that make a calculation easier Product- answer when you multiply two factors Quotient- the answer when you divide

Place values Tenths - .1 Hundredths- .12 Thousandths - .123 Ten-thousandths- .1234

Adding and Subtracting Decimals Step 1-- Line up the decimal points Step 2– Add or subtract as you would whole numbers Step 3– Place the decimal point in the same place as in the numbers above it. (stack them up)

Multiplying Decimals Multiply decimals like whole numbers. Count the total numbers of decimals points in the factors. Place that number of decimal places in the product.

Dividing Decimals Make the divisor a whole number Line up the decimals in the quotient and dividend Divide as you would whole numbers
