Metamorphic Rocks Summary M. Rocks occur when the structure, texture or composition has changed. Heat and pressure can change the existing minerals into new minerals. Metamorphic rock structures are caused by deformation. (silly putty)

Metamorphic Classification Contact metamorphism: Happens when rock comes in very close contact with a magma chamber. This forms more from heat than pressure. (cake batter) Regional metamorphism: happens when rock is under tremendous pressure from plate tectonics. Forms more from pressure than heat. (peanut butter cookies pressed with a fork)

2 Types of Texture Foliated – the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands. Examples : Slate, gneiss Nonfoliated – the texture in which the mineral grains are not arranged in planes or bands Examples: quartzite, marble
