Jesus Christ in the Old Testament Abraham Old Testament people who foreshadowed Jesus Christ through the Actions and Events of their lives

Introduction God chose Abraham and commanded him to leave his home and travel to an unknown place. Abraham did it. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation, and that Sarah, his wife would give him a son. Abraham believed even though both he and Sarah were well up in years.

Introduction When they were well advanced in years, Abraham and Sarah had a son, Isaac, the son of promise. Through this son, God would bless all the nations of the world, through the coming Son of God and Savior of the world. Because Abraham trusted God, he becomes a type of Christ.

Abraham----------Christ Abraham was called the “Father of the Faith” Christ is the author and perfector of the faith. Romans 4:16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring...who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...

Abraham----------Christ Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son and Isaac was ready to do what his father said. God the Father was willing to sacrifice His only Son and Jesus was ready to do what His Father said. Genesis 22:2 God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son... John 10:17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life...

Abraham----------Christ Abraham trusted that God would keep His word, even if it meant raising Isaac from the dead. Jesus Christ trusted that His Father would care for Him, even if it meant rising from the dead. Hebrews 11:19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death. 2 Corinthians 4:14 We know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.

Abraham----------Christ The sacrifice would take place on Mt. Moriah. Christ was sacrificed on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Genesis 22:2 2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, and go to the region of Moriah... 2 Chronicles 3:1 1 Then Solomon began to build the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah… John 19:17-18 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 Here they crucified him…

Isaac------------Christ Isaac had to carry his own wood for the sacrifice. Jesus had to carry His own wood (of the cross) for the sacrifice. John 19:17-18 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 Here they crucified him... Genesis 22:6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac...

Abraham----------Christ A ram was substituted for Isaac, so he did not have to die. Christ became the lamb provided by the Lord, to die in our place. Genesis 22:13 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. John 1:29 29 John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.

Similar Parallel The parallel between the ram offered on the altar as a substitute for Isaac and Christ offered on the cross as a substitute for us is significant. This is what we call the “Substitutionary Atonement,” that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself.

Dissimilar Parallel Whereas God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, God did not spare his own Son, Jesus, from dying on the cross. If Jesus had lived, the rest of humankind would have died. God sent his only Son to die for us so that we can be spared the eternal death we deserve and receive eternal life instead.

Abraham----------Christ Isaac was the child of promise. Abraham had to trust God to provide a son, even in his old age. Jesus Christ was the child of promise. Mary had to trust the word of the angel, even in this unusual way. Genesis 15:4-5 4 The word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." 5 … "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--So shall your offspring be." Luke 1:35 35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Abraham----------Christ In Isaac’s birth, all nations were to be blessed. In the birth of Jesus Christ, all nations are blessed. Matthew 28:19-20 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, 20 … And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Genesis 12:3 3 …all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
