Fundamentals of Algebra Chapter 2 Unit 1

Mathematical Expressions A mathematical expression can be a numerical expression or an algebraic expression A numeric expression contains numerals and indicates at least one mathematics operation An algebraic expression contains one or more variables and mathematics operations. It may also contain numerals. A variable is a symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number A mathematical expression does NOT contain the less then, equal to, or greater than symbol

You can write mathematical expressions from word phrases Expression Type Four times the sum of five and zero 4(5+0) Numerical Two more than the product of 8 squared and 10 (8 2 *10) +2 Half the difference between 12 and 7 1 2 (12-7) One third the sum of a number n and 7 1 3 (n+7) Algebraic The sum of a number b and 8 divided by 2 𝑛+8 2 4 more points than Cal scored (c) C+4 Twice as many DVDs as Bob has (d) 2D

You can also write word phrases from mathematical expressions Addition Expression -|-3|+a Subtraction Expression |b|-7 Multiplication Expression 5 𝑛 3 Division Expression -9÷x

Write each as a numerical expression The sum of 1.5 and 3 8 increased by -5 Half the product of 6 and 3

Write each as a word phrase -3n 5(a+1) 2n+3

Write each as a word phrase 𝑥−12 2 10 2𝑛 4a-|6|
