Background Paul writes from Corinth At the time of Paul, Corinth “was notorious as a place of wealth and indulgence. ‘To live as a Corinthian’ meant to live in luxury and immorality. As a seaport it was a meeting place of all nationalities and it offered all of the attendant vices. The temple of Aphrodite … priestesses were more than a thousand.. ‘sacred slaves’ who engaged in prostitution. It’s wealth was derived from its commercial traffic by sea and land, its pottery and brass industries, and its political importance as the capital of Achaia…” Population: 200,000 free men and 500,000 slaves. Role of the Jews and Gentiles in the Church at Rome Background Role of the Jews and Gentiles in the Church at Rome

Background The Church was Probably started in the synagogues. There was contention in the synagogues over whether Jesus was the Christ.

Background Claudius “expelled the Jews from Rome because they were constantly rioting at the instigation of Chrestus (believed to be a corruption of the Greek Christos)” - Suetonius : The Life of Claudius Act 18:1-2 After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome (probably around A. D. 49).

Background The Jews would be returning to Rome by the time of this letter (A.D. 54). Rom 16:3-5a Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. Greet also the church in their house.
