The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it may be transformed from one form into another, but the total amount of energy never changes.

What is energy? “the ability to do work” The combination of energy and matter make up the universe: Matter is substance, and energy is the mover of substance.

Energy is nature’s way of keeping score. We sense energy only when the score changes, either a transformation from one form of energy to another, or a transfer of energy from one point to another.

How is all energy divided? Potential Energy Kinetic Energy Gravitation Potential Energy Elastic Chemical

Potential Kinetic energy of position or energy in storage. Water behind a dam Hammer over head Food on the plate energy of motion, the form capable of doing work Flowing water A falling hammer Electrons moving in a wire to create electricity

PE = mgh m = mass (kg) h = height (m) g = accel due to gravity (9.8 m/s2) (MEMORIZE!)

Calculate the gravitational energy for a car with a mass of 1200 kg at the top of a 42 m high hill. Known/Unknown Equation Solve and Substitute PE = ? m = 1200 kg g = 9.8 m/s2 h = 42 m PE = (1200 kg)(9.8 m/s2)(42 m) PE = 493920 J PE = 4.9 x 10 5 J PE = mgh

Calculate the gravitational energy for a climber with a mass of 65 kg on top of Mount Everest (8800 m high). Known/Unknown Equation Solve and Substitute PE = ? m = 65 kg g = 9.8 m/s2 h = 8800 m PE = (65 kg)(9.8 m/s2)(8800 m) PE = 5605600 J PE = 5.6 x 10 6 J PE = mgh

What is Gravitational Potential Energy? Potential energy due to an object’s position P.E. = mass x height x gravity Don’t look down, Rover! Good boy!

What is Potential Energy? Energy that is stored and waiting to be used later

What is Elastic Potential Energy? Potential energy due compression or expansion of an elastic object. Notice the ball compressing and expanding

What is Chemical Potential Energy? Potential energy stored within the chemical bonds of an object

What is Kinetic Energy? Energy an object has due to its motion K.E. = .5(mass x speed2) KE = .5mv2

Calculate the kinetic energy of a 4 kg bowling ball at 10 m/s. Known/Unknown Equation Solve and Substitute KE = ? m = 4 kg v = 10 m/s KE = ½ (4 kg)(10 m/s)2 KE = 200 J KE = 2 x 10 2 J KE = ½ mv2

Calculate the kinetic energy of a 25 kg baseball at 50 m/s. Known/Unknown Equation Solve and Substitute KE = ? m = 25 kg v = 50 m/s KE = ½ (25 kg)(50 m/s)2 KE = 31250 J KE = 3 x 10 4 J KE = ½ mv2

Work is done when a force is exerted over a distance. Courtesy Jerry Ohlinger’s Movie Material Store Work is done when a force is exerted over a distance.

Work is equal to the force that is exerted times the distance over which it is exerted. W = F x d The unit of work combines the unit of force (N) with the unit of distance (m) Newton-meter (N-m) aka Joule.

An apple weighing 1 N falls through a distance of 1 m An apple weighing 1 N falls through a distance of 1 m. How much work is done on the apple by the force of gravity? Known/Unknown Equation Solve and Substitute U: W = ? K: d = 1 m F = 1 N W = (1 N)(1 m) W = 1 J W = Fd

A crane uses an average force of 5200 N to lift a girder 25 m A crane uses an average force of 5200 N to lift a girder 25 m. How much work does the crane do on the girder Known/Unknown Equation Solve and Substitute U: W = ? K: d = 25 m F = 5200 N W = (5200 N)(25 m) PE = 130000 J PE = 1.3 x 10 5 J W = Fd

Important Formulas and Units Quantity Definition Units Force mass x accel. Newtons (N) Work force x distance joules (J) Energy power x time joules (J) Grav PE mass x g x height joules (J) KE 0.5 x m x v² joules (J) Power work / time watts (W)

Diver A Fastest Diver B

Drawing Conclusions Which diver will hit water @ highest speed – Diver A What happens to energy when diver enters the water? – The energy is transformed into other forms of energy (thermal energy-friction, auditory energy –sound, etc.)

6 Fundamental Forms of Energy mechanical energy Thermal (heat) energy electromagnetic energy electrical energy nuclear energy chemical energy

What is the source of our energy? The source of practically all our energy is the Sun.

What is Mechanical Energy? Energy due to a object’s motion (kinetic) or position (potential). The bowling ball has mechanical energy. When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins!

Examples of Mechanical Energy

Light energy travels in waves and can travel in a vacuum like space What is Radiant Energy? Light energy travels in waves and can travel in a vacuum like space

Radiant Energy Includes energy from gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands

What is Electrical Energy? Energy caused by the movement of electrons Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy

What is Chemical Energy? Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.

Examples of Chemical Energy

What is Thermal Energy? Heat energy The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.

Nuclear Energy Potential energy stored in bonds between particles in the nucleus of an atom.

Sound Energy Repetitive compression and expansion of molecules in a substance.
