Napoleon Bonaparte Born in 1769. Was known as a short, hefty man at just about 5 foot 3 inches Was sent to military school at 9 years old. By 16 years old, he finished school and became a lieutenant in the artillery.

Napoleon Seizes Power Napoleon was asked to defend the government from the attack of the royalist rebels. Along with his army, Napoleon met the rebels before they attacked and defeated them with a cannonade. Napoleon and his men won. In 1796 the Directory(part of the government) appointed(put) Napoleon in command of the French army to go against Austria and Sardinia.

A Shift in Government Napoleon and his army won many battles across the Alps. By 1799, the Directory (name of the government) lost control and the loyalty of the French people. Napoleon took this as his chance to take control. His troops surrounded the national legislature and seized the government. Napoleon managed to keep stories about his defeat out of the newspapers and therefore, people in France continued to view him as a hero.

Coup d’Etat: sudden seizure of power “blow to the state” Napoleon established a group of 3 consuls for government: Napoleon named himself the first consul (A.K.A – dictator) Napoleon took his troops and continued to fight the war with Britain, Austria, and Russia. Eventually, all 3 nations decided to sign a peace agreement with France and Europe was at peace for the first time in 10 years.

Napoleon Rules France The people voted in favor of a constitution which gave all power to Napoleon as first consul. 1. Napoleon supported law that made a central government stronger and some of the goals of the revolution. 2. Created a national banking system and tax collecting system. 3. Took steps to end corruption and get rid of bad government officials. Instead he created lycees which was a government run public school which would educate people to become good government officials. Lycees were open to all male students. Once the students graduated, they were given a job in a public office based on grades rather than family connections.

Napoleonic Code and Rules Napoleon signed a Concordat which was an agreement to restore the position of the Church in France. It separated the Church from the State. Created the Napoleonic Code which gave the country a uniform set of laws. It limited peoples personal liberty and promoted order and authority over individual rights. The Napoleonic Code limited freedom of speech and press, and brought back slavery in the French colonies of the Caribbean.
