Vocab geography – the study of the characteristics of the world’s land and people institutions – long-standing practices, traditions, or customs that regulate a group culture – the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular group culture trait – a characteristic, such as language, beliefs, food, or customs that is shared by a group

Vocab region – an area of land that is unified by a common characteristic culture region – an area that is characterized by a population that shares common beliefs, history, language, customs, and traditions cultural landscape – the physical qualities that reflect the culture of a particular place location – an exact point on the earth’s surface place – an area distinguished by unique physical and human characteristics

1. LOCATION: Where is it? Why is it located there? Absolute Location Is given in degrees of latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). Relative Location Relative location depends upon point of reference. Eg. Near, far, a short drive. Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another.

Physical Characteristics 2. PLACE: What is it like? Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, plains, etc.), bodies of water (oceans, lakes, bays, etc.), ecosystems (soil, plants, animals, and climate)

Human Characteristics 2. PLACE: What is it like? Human Characteristics Bridges, roads, buildings, culture, languages, beliefs. All places have features that distinguish them from other places.

3. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How do people interact with and change their environment? We depend on the environment. We adapt to the environment. We modify the environment.

4. MOVEMENT How are people and places linked? Movement of People Cars, Trucks, Trains, Planes Movement of Products Movement of Information/ideas Phones, computer (email), mail TV, Radio, Magazines

5. REGIONS What are regions and how are they useful? Regions can be defined on the basis of physical and human characteristics Geographers divide the world into regions to help them interpret information.

The Equator is zero (0) degrees of latitude. Lines of latitude are measured north and south of the equator. Other lines of latitude are called parallels because they are parallel to the equator. Line of Latitude are measured from zero to 90 degrees north latitude and from zero to 90 degrees south latitude 90ºN 0º 90ºS

Lines of Longitude are called Meridians 0º Lines of Longitude are called Meridians The Prime Meridian, or Greenwich Meridian is zero (0) degrees Longitude. Longitude is measured from 0-180º east and west from the Prime Meridian
