Adding Integers with Different Signs

Warm Up -8 + 14 = 4. 7 + (-5) = 5 + (-21) = 5. 14 + (-14) = -8 + 14 = 4. 7 + (-5) = 5 + (-21) = 5. 14 + (-14) = 0 + (-5) = 6. 32 + (-8) =

To add integers with different signs, find the difference between the absolute values of the two addends, and then use the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value as the sign for the sum. -4 + 18 = 25 + (-35) =

Omar owes his parents $10. 00. He earns $3. 00 by washing the dishes Omar owes his parents $10.00. He earns $3.00 by washing the dishes. Does he still owe hos parents money? If so, how much? Demonstrate your reasoning. You may use a number line, counters, or absolute values.

The school had a fundraiser for the band. They raised $300 The school had a fundraiser for the band. They raised $300.00, but spent $28.00 on supplies to raise the money. Express the actual amount earned as the sum of two integers with different signs.

Bart and Sam played a game in which each player earns or loses points in each turn. A player’s total score after two turns is the sum of his points earned or lost. The player with the greater score after two turns wins. Bart earned 123 points and lost 180 points. Sam earned 185 points and lost 255 points. Which person won the game? Explain.

Suppose we add two integer together and the sum is zero. What can we conclude about the integers? Can you find an example?

Suppose we add two integers and the sum is negative? What can we conclude about the integers? Can you find an example(s)?

Exit Ticket 6 + (-7) = 2. -9 + (4) = -12 + 8 = 4. 15 + (-6) = 6 + (-7) = 2. -9 + (4) = -12 + 8 = 4. 15 + (-6) = A football team lost 5 yards on one play and gained 12 yards on the next play. Write a sum of integers to find the overall change I field position. Explain your answer. At 7 A.M. the temperature was -4◦F. At 9 A.M. It was 8 degrees warmer. What was the temperature at 9 A.M.?
