Study of Hebrews Lesson 4

Hebrews 2:1-4 2:1 For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, 3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

Hebrews 2:1 2:1 For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. For what reason? Why is it so important that they don’t drift away? To point, what exactly have they heard?

Hebrews 2:2 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, Given is a set of conditions leading, when met, to a result in the next verse Condition: the word spoken through angels proved unalterable Condition: every transgression and disobedience receives a just penalty Are these conditions met?

Hebrews 2:3 3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, Given the two conditions in vs. 2 are met (and they are), then what is the result? “it was at first spoken by Jesus” – Guess what? He’s superior to everything, so His word means something! Confirmed by those who heard – again, this may indicate the author wasn’t right there as Jesus spoke

Hebrews 2:4 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. But those who were there weren’t the only witnesses Who else witnessed about Jesus? And how? Author mentions signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit – aren’t they all sort of the same thing?

Hebrews 2:5-8 5 For He did not subject to angels the world to come, concerning which we are speaking. 6 But one has testified somewhere, saying, "WHAT IS MAN, THAT YOU REMEMBER HIM? OR THE SON OF MAN, THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT HIM?

Hebrews 2:5-8 7 "YOU HAVE MADE HIM FOR A LITTLE WHILE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS; YOU HAVE CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR, AND HAVE APPOINTED HIM OVER THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; 8 YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET." For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him.

Hebrews 2:5 5 For He did not subject to angels the world to come, concerning which we are speaking. What’s the world to come that the author refers to? Have we been speaking about this world anywhere so far? What is important about Him not subjecting the world to come to angels?

Hebrews 2:6-8a 6 But one has testified somewhere, saying, . 8 YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET." Start of a quote out of Psalm 8:4-6

Hebrews 2:8b 8 … For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. So, who’s the him that all things were subjected to? Careful now! It must be man, NOT Jesus Why? Because all things are not yet under his subjection – we are still subject to death, disease, etc. We are still subject to creation

Hebrews 2:8b 8 … For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. What does this mean? What’s the author trying to say? Put it all together Jesus is superior to the angels because for the reasons we saw in the last chapter But right now, we (man) are still in subjection to creation due to sin

Hebrews 2:8b 8 … For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. What does this mean? What’s the author trying to say? Put it all together Jesus is superior to the angels because for the reasons we saw in the last chapter But right now, we (man) are still in subjection to creation due to sin Why does this matter?

Hebrews 2:9 9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. Because Jesus gave up equality with God to take on death for all man He essentially “balanced the books” for us
