Figure Prevalence of sleep apnoea syndrome in the general population aged 40 years or older Prevalence of sleep apnoea syndrome according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3) criteria. (A) The presence of one or more of the following: the patient complains of sleepiness, non-restorative sleep, fatigue, or insomnia symptoms; the patient wakes with breath holding, gasping, or choking; the bed partner or other observer reports habitual snoring, breathing interruptions, or both, during the patient's sleep; and the patient has been diagnosed with hypertension, mood disorder, cognitive dysfunction, coronary artery disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, or type 2 diabetes. (B) Polysomnography or so-called out of centre sleep testing showing five or more predominantly obstructive respiratory events per h. (C) 15 or more predominantly obstructive respiratory events per h. AHI=apnoea-hypopnoea index.
