S.B. 8.1 Chapter Summary Tāmasa, the brother of the third Manu, was the fourth Manu . . During his reign . . . Harimedhā begot a son named Hari in the womb of his wife Hariṇī. This Hari, an incarnation of God, saved the devotee Gajendra. This incident is described as gajendra-mokṣaṇa. At the end of this chapter, Parīkṣit Mahārāja particularly asks about this incident.

In specific, we see that the prayers rock between two meters. 8.3.1 is a preface talking about the prayer’s origin. At Bhakti-vedanta we should know the Srngara-arati and Nrsmha-prayers word for word. What does “Yatate ca tato bhūyaḥ saṁsiddhau kuru-nandana” mean? SB 8.3.2 The King of the elephants, Gajendra, said: I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Person, Vāsudeva [oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya]. Because of Him this material body acts due to the presence of spirit, and therefore He is the root cause of everyone. He is worshipable for such exalted persons as Brahmā and Śiva, and He has entered the heart of every living being. Let me meditate upon Him. In the purport SP does not just illuminate point “1.” but goes beyond it. How?

SB 8.3.3 The Supreme Godhead is the supreme platform on which everything rests, the ingredient by which everything has been produced, and the person who has created and is the only cause of this cosmic manifestation. Nonetheless, He is different from the cause and the result. I surrender unto Him, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is self-sufficient in everything.

Not only does He enliven all bodies but he enlivens all matter Not only does He enliven all bodies but he enlivens all matter. Yet, is there any matter in the universe that is not a body? SB 8.3.4 Same idea as previous verse? SB 8.3.5 Previous verse said, “sometimes renders it invisible” and now Gaj. Continues to expand that. SB 8.3.6 Same ideas, no? K is the ultimate cause but He cannot be known. Purport:  “A similar understanding was expressed by Kuntīdevī.” SB 8.3.7 Demigods want to see him but can’t, and also above them want to see Him. SP expands that the Sannyasis and Jnanis are qualified to become devotees and then what about those who do?

SB 8.3.8-9 He is unknowable and unrelated to this world by personal desire, but He comes to ______? “When the Lord comes to this material world, He does not become a product of matter.” SB 8.3.10 I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the self-effulgent Supersoul, who is the witness in everyone’s heart, who enlightens the individual soul and who cannot be reached by exercises of the mind, words or consciousness.

SB 8.3.11 The Supreme Personality of Godhead is realized by [how to realize the unknowable] pure devotees who act in the transcendental existence of bhakti-yoga. He is the bestower of uncontaminated happiness and is the master of the transcendental world. Therefore I offer my respect unto Him.

SB 8.3.12 I offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Vāsudeva, who is all-pervading, to the Lord’s fierce form as Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, to the Lord’s form as an animal [Lord Varāhadeva], to Lord Dattātreya, who preached impersonalism, to Lord Buddha, and to all the other incarnations. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Lord, who has no material qualities but

who accepts the three qualities goodness, passion and ignorance within this material world. I also offer my respectful obeisances unto the impersonal Brahman effulgence.
