1.1 Variables and Expressions

Vocabulary Variable: Symbols used to represent unspecified numbers or values. Typically you use the first letter of the word that describes the unspecified value. For example: if you’re trying to solve for Area, you use an A as the variable x & y are common variables as well

More vocabulary Algebraic Expression: Consists of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations.

How do you write an expression that shows multiplication? Factors: The quantities being multiplied Product: The result of a multiplication problem.

Exponents Exponent or Power The exponent indicates the number of times the base is used as a factor. Base

Write an algebraic expression for each verbal expression. Example #1 A) eight more than a number B) 7 less the product of 4 and a number x. C) one third of the original area a. D) the product of 7 and m to the fifth power.

To evaluate an expression means to find its value. Example #2 Evaluate 26 Example #3: Write a verbal expression for each algebraic expression. A) 4m3 B) c2 + 21d 64 The product of 4 and m to the 3rd power c squared plus the product of 21 and d These answers aren’t the only way of writing the expression.
