Let Us Draw Near Hebrews 4:14-16

“LET US …” Let Us Fear (Hebrews 4:1) Let Us Be Diligent (Hebrews 4:11) Let Us Hold Fast our Confession (Hebrews 4:14; 3:6, 14; 10:23) Let Us Come Boldly to the Throne of Grace (Hebrews 4:14-16) Let Us Go On to Perfection (Hebrews 6:1) Let Us Draw Near to God (Hebrews 10:22; 13:13) Let Us Consider One Another (Hebrews 10:24-25)

“Let us THEREFORE draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace” Jesus Christ is our Priest (Hebrews 4-10) Jesus Christ – Must offer sacrifice. Hebrews 8:3 Jesus is qualified. Hebrews 4:14-16 Offered Himself (supreme sacrifice)– Once! Hebrews 9:11-12, 14; Hebrews 7:23-27; cf. verse 25

“THEREFORE …” Jesus was tempted. Hebrews 4:15; 2:17-18 He is our Example. 1 Peter 2:21-22 He is our Mediator. 1 Timothy 2:5 He is our Sacrifice for sin. Hebrews 10:12 Own blood. Hebrews 10:12 “When he had made PURIFICATION OF SINS.” Hebrews 1:3

“… DRAW NEAR with boldness unto the throne of grace” Hebrews 4:16 OT of priests in their approach to God. cf. Leviticus 21:17-21. The priest spoke for the people to God. Leviticus 1:1-4; Leviticus 7; Leviticus 9:2ff It denotes approaching God for worship and prayer. It’s use here suggests that the priestly privilege of access to God is now extended to all Christians! You are a priest. 1 Peter 2:5,9

“… DRAW NEAR with boldness unto the throne of grace” Hebrews 4:16 What does it mean? We can come before the throne of God! Psalms 89:14, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of thy throne: lovingkindness and truth go before thy face.” Isaiah 6:1-3; cf. Revelation 4; Exodus 3:5

“… draw near WITH BOLDNESS unto the throne of grace” Hebrews 4:16 “with confidence” (Greek, parresia, meaning “full story”). In ancient Greece … Describes the right of a citizen to speak his mind on any subject in the town assembly. (Lightfoot) Only “full citizens” had this right, slaves did not. (W.E. Vine) As used here in Hebrews, it stands for our freedom to approach God … Without hesitation or inhibition. Made possible by the blood of Jesus. cf. Hebrews 10:19-22

“… draw near with boldness unto the THRONE OF GRACE” Hebrews 4:16 “that we may receive MERCY, and may find GRACE to help (us) in time of need.” Mercy – active pity, compassion i.e., forgiveness for our sins. cf. Psalms 51:1; 25:16; 27:7; Psalms 30:10; 31:9 For we do sin; to deny that is to call God a liar. – cf. 1 John 1:8, 10 Grace – “Unmerited favor.” Saved by grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 His providential protection (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:13) and divine strength. cf. Philippians 4:13; cf. Romans 3:22-26 How should that change us? Romans 11:30-32 Romans 12:1, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God …”

“… draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:14-16) Prayer helps us endure. James 5:13 Rather than be overwhelmed … pray! Mercy from God is provided Prayer expresses a confident faith. 4:16 High Priest’s sympathy. 4:15 Trust in His salvation and intercession. 7:25 Anxiety Paralyzes faith. Philippians 4:6-7 7

When we are diligent to “draw near with boldness …”, what do we find? A God who is RICH in mercy. Ephesians 2:4 And a “sympathetic High Priest” who knows and cares! Mercy, and grace to help us in time of need!
