Proper Interview Techniques Mitzie Holloway Work Based Learning Coordinator

How to Approach and Formally Greet an Employer

Preparation for the Interview Never forget the decision to hire is made in the first 5 – 10 minutes of the interview, with the remaining time spent justifying that decision. There is no substitution for preparation before approaching the employer.

Research the Company Know the company’s products and services, study and research competitors. Be prepared to tell the interviewer why their company is attractive to you.

Know Yourself Know Yourself – What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Formulate responses by asking the question: “Why should they hire me?” Have a response ready for “Tell me about yourself”.

Appearance - Men Fingernails should be short and clean Hair well groomed, and freshly trimmed. Navy blue or dark gray suit, white tie Use deodorant, avoid colognes Shoes black and freshly polished with black or blue socks.

Dress Appropriately Dress appropriately for the office you are trying to work in. To most people personal cleanliness and neatness is important.

Appearance – Women Fingernails clean or manicured and modest Wear a suit or tailored dress Avoid exotic hairstyles and excessive makeup Jewelry should be limited and subtle Closed toe pump Good posture, cross legs at ankles not knees

Greeting the Employer Be yourself exhibiting poise, confidence, and self-respect. Maintain a high energy level, stand or sit with back straight. Make good eye contact, smile, and shake hands firmly.

Introducing Oneself To The Employer Speak clearly and sincerely State your name and express your gratitude for him/her agreeing to meet with you.

Announcing the Purpose of the Visit Verbalize the position for which you are applying for and express your excitement of the possibilities their company has to offer. You must present a positive attitude. You must NOT seem disinterested or appear to be job shopping.

How to Carry Out a Successful Interview

Be Quiet and Focus Listen to the question asked and then answer; keeping the answer between 2 and 3 minutes long. Do not ramble about unrelated topics

Look Them in the Eyes Eye contact is very important during an interview. By looking away lack of confidence or interest is often given off.

Get the Info It is important to have an informational interview. The interviewer should feel that you are looking for information, not a job.

Virtual Thanks Always send a follow up letter. While there are some good and bad sides to sending an email; it is best to send a thank you of some form after the interview.

Knowing What You Offer You should always be prepared to answer open ended questions such as; “Tell me about yourself.” You should be aware of the traits and qualifications you have that fit the job.

Keeping Time Go Alone Never take anyone with you to an interview. Interviewers are not impressed when someone else accompanies you. Try to arrive early for your interview, but not too early. You should allow for 20 to 30 minutes extra incase of any unexpected disasters. Do not enter the building until 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment.

Your References Sell Yourself You should have three to five people for your references; include all contact information. Ask for permission to use them as a reference. Send them a copy of your resume. Tell them what you can do for them and what you can bring to the company, department, and position.

Talking Salary Always let the interviewer bring up the issue of money. If you are asked about salary too early, ask to know more about the budget to postpone the question.

Don’t Forget to Listen Listen through eye contact. Listen with nonverbal expressions. Listen until the speaker is finished

Ask the Power Questions Ask questions early in the interview to find out what the interviewer is looking for in an employee. Such as, “What are you most hoping for to find in the person you hire?”

Managing Time in Your Interview Make sure to answer questions with short and simple answers instead of rambling on; when one rambles more time is wasted on unimportant topics.

Waiting by the Phone Interviewers may not have a chance to call you back on the day they promised. If a week goes by without a phone call, make a call and ask if the position is still open.

Prove What You Could Do Always give a positive answer. If you cannot do a specific task the company needs you to do, you should emphasize how quickly you learn.

Be Ready for the Screen Call After your interview expect a call back. Prepare your family members that you may receive a call from the employer. When you answer the phone be very polite.

Attitude Adjustment Finding a job can be a long process, however long it may be; try to stay positive. Employers can sense negativity and your attitude can often make or break you.

Think of an Interview as a First Date Often people are defensive during a first interview. Don’t consider it a one sided situation; think of it more as a first date where you are both trying to figure out if it’s a match.

The Worlds Toughest Job Interview Question “Why have you been unemployed for so long?” Give a brief answer and then move on to explain how you are perfect for the job.

Follow Up an Interview Immediately following the interview, send a short note of appreciation to thank the employer or interviewer for their time. Reiterate your interest in the position and the company as well as your ability to do the job. Be sure to mail your correspondence the following day. This is a good way to keep your name current in the interviewer’s mind.
