FREE Program Goals Address and eliminate lead hazards in owner and tenant occupied single family and multi-family housing. Identify Health & Safety deficiencies in units identified with lead hazards (LHCHHG) Public education and outreach on lead health hazards. Test and identify children for elevated blood lead levels.

FREE Single Family Home Owner Occupied or Rental unit Must have a child under the age of six living in or visiting at least six hours in any seven day week. Must have a combined family income at or below 80 percent of the areas median family income level * Vacant rental units are eligible

Multi-Family Units Duplex/Triplex/Fourplex FREE Multi-Family Units Duplex/Triplex/Fourplex 50% of units must be made available to families with income at or below 50 percent of the areas median family income level Example: Family of four $37,700 per year The remaining units shall be occupied or made available to families with incomes at or below 80 percent of the areas median family income level. Example: Family of four- $60,300 per year

Multi-Family Units including Single Family,, Duplex, Triplex, Fourplex FREE Multi-Family Units including Single Family,, Duplex, Triplex, Fourplex Landlord shall give priority in renting units to families with a child under the age of six years for not less than three (3) years from the time abatement work has completed. Landlord is prohibited from increasing the rent on any unit for up to a year that has completed lead abatement work. The City of Austin will provide the landlord with a certificate of completion so the owners can comply with his/her disclosure requirements.

FREE Lead Abatement The Permanent removal of a lead based paint hazard. Remove and replace old wood windows with new low E energy efficient aluminum windows. Remove and replace interior and exterior doors. Remove and replace damaged or rotted siding and trim Remove and replace soil and sod.

Why is Lead so Dangerous? * Lead is known as a neurotoxin (poison) Harms the brain and nervous system of fetuses and young children. Causes behavioral and learning difficulties. Chronic exposure to lead can cause high blood pressure and vascular disease. At very high levels, lead poisoning can cause seizures, coma, and even death.

Common overlooked symptoms Behavior and learning problems, such as hyperactivity Damage to the brain and nervous system Slowed growth Diarrhea/constipation Reproductive problems Fatigue Tingling Hands and feet Hearing problems Headaches and memory problems High blood pressure Nausea Anemia Weight loss Irritability In rare cases, extreme lead poisoning can cause seizures, coma and even death.

Children are most vulnerable? Young children explore using their mouths (hands, toys, blankets, crawling etc….) Their bodies absorb lead more efficiently than adults. Lead dust tends to accumulate at floor level.

THINGS TO DO: Do not Give your children home Remedies like: Azarcon & Greta Do Not Use glazed pottery to cook, serve or store food. Keep your home clean. Do not let your child eat non-food items Wash your child’s toys, bottles and pacifiers. Wash your child's hands before meals and at bedtime. Work: Leave your work clothes at work. Do not wear your work shoes in the car. Wash work clothes separately from family clothes. Keep your child away from any hobby or activity that uses lead.

FREE Prevention Lead Assessment of your home Call the City of Austin’s LeadSmart Program 974-3100 Inspection by a State Certified Lead Inspector. State Certified Risk Assessor will recommend a lead hazards removal plan specialized for your home. Have areas of home containing lead abated. Everyday Wash children's hands. Mop floors, wipe furniture and window sills with damp cloth. Prepare meals high in iron and calcium.
