Title: Mr. Santoro Gets Delayed Name Date Science Class Title: Mr. Santoro Gets Delayed Mr. Santoro was looking forward to a seminar in New Jersey over the summer break. He decided to drive there, and allowed two hours travel time to arrive by 9:00am. After leaving the house, it took him 10 minutes to get to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts, which was 5 miles away, for his coffee. There was a delay at the drive-up window which cost him 10 minutes. Once back on the road, Mr. Santoro made good time. He traveled 50 miles to the turn-off exit in 60 minutes. Unfortunately, there was an accident on the exit ramp, which stalled traffic for another 15 minutes. Finally, Mr. Santoro drove the last 5 miles to his destination in 20 minutes. Point Time ( ) x Distance ( ) y A B C D E F

3. What was the average speed for leg #1? Show your work. Name Date Science Class Graph Mr. Santoro’s journey, using time (minutes) on the x axis, and distance (miles) on the y-axis. 2. This journey had five parts, or legs. Label the first leg “#1” (from home to the donut shop), the second leg “#2” (waiting for coffee), the third leg “#3” (on the highway), and the fourth leg “#4” (in stalled traffic), and the fifth leg “#5” (getting to the destination). 3. What was the average speed for leg #1? Show your work. 4. What was the average speed for leg #2? Show your work. 5. What was the average speed for leg #3? Show your work. 6. What was the average speed for leg #4? Show your work. 7. What was the average speed for leg #5? Show your work. 8. What was Mr. Santoro’s average speed for the whole journey? 9. Mr. Santoro was delayed twice on his journey, once at the donut shop, and once at the exit ramp. Was he late for his seminar? Answer, using evidence from the graph.
