What do bacterium and whales have in common. http://www. ck12 Teacher Notes: Have the students write down their own ideas first then allow them to Think- Pair- Share (There is a short description on bacteria in the student note page). The goal is to get students to come up with the 7 characteristics of life (which may need some probing questions as shown in the next slid). Once the students have come up with a few characteristics.... Show them the list and make sure that they understand what each characteristic means Finally... Students will be analyzing if a virus and camel are living based on the 7 characteristics of life. ( A small description of viruses is included.)

Probing questions How do they keep living? What do they need to continue to survive? What must they be able to do in the environment when faced with stimuli? Do they look the same from the beginning of their lives to the end? Or do they have stages in their lives? Is equilibrium important? What are they made up of? What makes a bacterium a bacterium and a whale a whale?

7 Characteristics of Life respond to their environment grow and develop reproduce obtain and use energy maintain homeostasis made up of cells contain genetic material that can be passed to offspring

Do a virus and a camel have anything in common?
