A Tale in Jealousy and Intrigue The Salem Witch Trials A Tale in Jealousy and Intrigue

Context Winter of 1692 several young women of Salem Village experienced seizures. Pressed, the girls identify witches in their community as the source of their afflictions. In a matter of months 200 accused, 59 tried, 31 convicted and 19 hung. Probably single most studied event in Colonial history.

Economic tensions Salem Town was a thriving port Salem Village felt the pinch of shrinking farmland These economic tensions produce deep divisions in the communities. Witchcraft accusations, egged on by less prosperous provided an outlet for resentment and grievances. Fear of women gaining economic and social independence.

Spectral Evidence Spectral evidence is a form of evidence based upon dreams and visions. Spectral evidence was testimony that the accused witch's spirit (i.e. spectre) appeared to the witness in a dream or vision (for example, a black cat or wolf). The dream or vision was admitted as evidence.
