ATM Machines Name : Farah Rasmi Abu-Qasem Report about : ATM Machines supervised by : DR. Ahmed abu-mosameh Collage : College of Business July 2010

Who invented the idea of an ATM? Bank automation started as early as 1939 with the invention of the ATM by Luther George Simjian ( ) from Turkish origin. Simjian came up with the idea of creating a hole-in- the-wall machine that would allow customers to make financial transactions. The idea met skepticism but he persuaded what is now Citicorp to give it a trial.

After six months, the bank reported that there was little demand. "It seems the only people using the machines were a small number of prostitutes and gamblers who didn't want to deal with tellers face to face," wrote Simjian.

What is an ATM machine ? An automated teller machine (ATM), also known as automatic banking machine (ABM), Cash Machine, or Cash point, is a computerized telecommunications device that provides the clients of a financial institution with access to financial transactions in a public space without the need for a cashier, human clerk or bank teller.

The Hardware of an ATM An ATM is typically made up of the following devices: CPU (to control the user interface and transaction devices) Magnetic and/or Chip card reader (to identify the customer) PIN Pad (similar in layout to a Touch tone or Calculator keypad)often manufactured as part of a secure enclosure. Secure crypt processor, generally within a secure enclosure. Display (used by the customer for performing the transaction) Function key buttons (usually close to the display) or a Touch screen (used to select the various aspects of the transaction) Record Printer (to provide the customer with a record of their transaction) Vault (to store the parts of the machinery requiring restricted access) Housing (for aesthetics and to attach signage to)

How does it identify Customers ? On most modern ATMs, the customer is identified by inserting a plastic ATM card with a magnetic stripe or a plastic smart card with a chip, that contains a unique card number and some security information such as an expiration date or CVVC (CVV)

Alternative uses ATMs include many functions which are not directly related to the management of one's own bank account, such as: Deposit currency recognition, acceptance, and recycling Paying routine bills, fees, and taxes (utilities, phone bills, social security, legal fees, taxes, etc.) Printing bank statements Purchasing Postage stamps. Lottery tickets Train tickets Concert tickets Movie tickets

Location ATMs are placed not only near or inside the premises of banks, but also in locations such as shopping centers/malls, airports, grocery stores, petrol/gas stations, restaurants, or any place large numbers of people may gather.

ATM Security Many banks recommend that you select your own PIN. Visa offers the following PIN tips: *Don't write down your PIN. If you must write it down, do not store it in your wallet or purse. *Make your PIN a series of letters or numbers that you can easily remember, but that cannot easily be associated with you personally. *Avoid using birth dates, initials, house numbers or your phone number.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME !
